The image is of a histological section taken from the
midshaft femur of one of the 9 crew members recovered from
the wreck of the Confederate submersible H.L. Hunley. The
Hunley was sunk on February 17, 1864 in Charleston Harbor
off the coast of South Carolina during a battle with the
Union warship USS Housatonic. Based upon histomorphometric
analysis, it was estimated that this member of the Hunley
crew was in their late 20's at the time of their death. |
