Dr. Jeffrey CohenContact InformationDr. Jeffrey Cohen Research InterestsMy work focuses in three areas: migration, development and most recently nutrition. I have worked in Oaxaca, Mexico for many years with the support of a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation and I have explored the outcomes of migration for sending communities in the central valleys of the state. This work is summarized in my ethnography, "The Culture of Migration in Southern Mexico." I also work with Dominicans entering the US and have conducted some comparative research that examines the similarities and differences between rural Oaxacan migrants to the US and Kurdish migrants to Western Europe. I am also interested in economic development and particularly how rural communities cope with their integration into global market systems. Finally, I have begun a new project that examines the nutritional, economic and dietary value of chapulines (grasshoppers) in the rural Oaxacan diet. This project is sponsored by the National Geographic Foundation and is just beginning-so please stay tuned! Teaching Schedule 2007-2008
