Congratulations go to Katy Marklein, who learned (the same day as her oral candidacy exams) that she has been awarded an American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) Research Grant.  The support funds most of her research and travel expenses in the U.S. and Turkey for her dissertation project,  "Ave Imperium, mortui te salutamus: Contextualizing Roman Imperialism through Biocultural and Bioarchaeological Perspectives of a Liminal Population."  This research tests the hypothesis that, much like indigenous Romano-British populations, Roman imperialism had detrimental biological effects on liminal communities in northern Anatolia. Employing bioarchaeological methods to observe differences in violence, physiological health, and dietary resource allocation between early and late imperial populations (AD 130-270) at Oymaağaç, Turkey, this study investigates particularly how Roman imperial rule may have locally impacted the socio-political and socio-cultural environment of the Black Sea region.
