My research interests are in the area of skeletal biology and especially its applications in forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology and paleopathology.

I apply microscopic methods (histomorphometry) to reveal evidence of health and disease from skeletal remains, and enhance our understanding of population variation, past and present.  Of particular interest is variation in the severity and pattern for age associated bone loss, and increased bone fragility.

Ongoing research seeks to:

  •     Improve and develop new microscopic age estimation methods, and refine our ability to assess skeletal health;
  •     Expand our understanding of intra-skeletal variation in bone mass and microstructure;
  •     Expand the use of bone porosity as a measure of bone quality.

My research typically offers research experience and opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students, and often involves collaborations with colleagues in other programs, e.g., the Division of Anatomy in the OSU College of Medicine.

My teaching reflects my research interests, and includes courses on basic skeletal biology (Anthro 5608), and forensic anthropology (Anthro 3305 and Anthro 5644).  I also routinely offer independent study in special topics relating to skeletal biology and bone histology to students with appropriate interests and background.
