Natalia's project is titled "Women's insecurities in the context of male migration: mental health outcomes and risks". The goal of the research is to investigate how male migration from Kyrgyzstan creates insecurities for women who stay behind, and, specifically, to understand the outcomes of male migration for the mental health of married women. Long separations in migrant households encourages women to problem solve and challenges them to cope with multiple obligations. Re-negotiating power and status in sending households produces complex insecurities for women left behind and threatens their mental health and well-being, particularly around stress, depression or anxiety. Natalia applies the concept of human insecurity and critical feminist framework to explore the outcomes of male migration for women’s mental health. In doing so she connects gender, migration and health to understand how inequalities in gender relations and access to power in Kyrgyzstan society exacerbate women’s vulnerability.
