Research and Travel Funding
The Department of Anthropology offers four awards that provide funds to support graduate student travel and research: the Daniel Hughes Memorial Fund, the Larsen Research and Travel Award, the Elizabeth A. Salt Anthropology Travel Award, and the DEM3 Anthropology Research and Development Fund. Calls for proposals are initiated by the Graduate Studies Committee. The number of calls per year is based on available funds.
Through the graciousness of Ms. Violeta Hughes, the Daniel Hughes Memorial Fund will help support graduate and undergraduate student travel to regional, national, or international professional meetings. Awards are normally limited to $500. Larger amounts may be considered at the discretion of the Graduate Studies Committee.
Applications must include the following items: (1) curriculum vitae; (2) the submitted abstract (if accepted, provide documentation and indicate if it is a podium or poster presentation); (3) if the work is co-authored, a brief statement that clearly outlines your personal contribution to the finished work; and (4) a budget with itemized cost estimates and an explanation for how you will cover costs that go beyond $500. Combine into a single pdf for submission.
The Larsen Research and Travel Award provides support for student research and research-related travel. All graduate students in the Department of Anthropology are eligible to apply. Funds may be used to pay for research expenses that will significantly increase the quality of master’s or doctoral research projects, including but not limited to travel to field sites or research collections, supplies and equipment, and laboratory analyses. Travel to conferences is not allowable.
Awards will normally be limited to $1,000. Larger amounts may be considered at the discretion of the Graduate Studies Committee. Any equipment purchased with award funds will become the property of OSU and will remain in the Department after the project has been completed. Equipment purchases may not exceed the funded amount.
Applications must include the following items: (1) curriculum vitae; (2) two-page project description, including an overview of the research project and an explanation of how the award would advance your progress on the research project; and (3) a budget with itemized cost estimates.
