The Image in the Archipelago:
Rethinking oceanic Art

by

Susanne Küchler, University College London

Oceanic art has been subject to collection based and ethnographic research for more than 6
decades. This lecture reframes understandings of seascape society images. The iterative and
mobile nature of images connects people irrespective of face-to-face or place-based
communication, raising awareness of the relevance of art in Oceania at a time when many
island communities are under threat of displacement.
Susanne Küchler is Professor of Anthropology and Material Culture at University College
London. She has conducted over 25 years of fieldwork in island Melanesia and in Eastern
Polynesia. Her work focuses on appraising material translation and images in maritime
ecologies.
