Surviving South African Racist Separations
Apartheid Defeated
Prof Jeffrey K McKee
6:00 pm, March 17th, Seventh Son Brewing
(at the intersection of 4th & 4th in Columbus’ historic Italian Village)
OSU Professor Jeffrey McKee lived in South Africa from 1986 to 1996, a time period spanning a ‘state of emergency’ to the end of ‘apartheid’ - a governmentally institutionalized form of racism – to the beginning of a true democracy, with votes for all. His scientific fossil research led him to ‘homelands’ created by ‘grand apartheid’ where he got to know local customs and ways of life. There he witnessed the true costs of racism and bigotry, but also learned the resilience of the human spirit. McKee’s stories of perseverance, daring, and humor, bring an anthropological perspective that captures a unique reflection on our modern times.
