Tonight at 5:30 pm we are going to be holding an anthropology-themed movie night! The movie will be Gorillas in The Mist, a 1988 drama/biography about Dian Fossey, an American primatologist who was one of the first researchers to fully study the rare mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei) in the forests of the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. She is portrayed in this movie by Sigourney Weaver, who has stared in movies such as Alien, Aliens, and Ghostbusters. Although she was a brilliant and dedicated primatologist, Dian Fossey's story was also filled with controversy, as her methods of defending the gorillas from poaching and habitat loss put her at odds against powerful forces that were a product of the political tumultuous events surrounding the park. Will there be controversy? You bet. Will there be forbidden affairs with National Geographic cameramen? Potentially. Will there be a inspirational story of one women's struggle to preserve the animals that had given her life meaning, direction, and solace? Always. If you are interested in wildlife, conservation, or even just an academy award nominated performance, this is the place to be!
Food and drink will be provided for the event. The run time for the movie is approx. 2 hours, so our meeting should be finished by about 7:30. Please RSVP to our secretary, Franki Scali (scali.14), if you are interested in attending; this will allow us to order food more appropriately.
