Grace Conrad is a Ph.D. candidate in archaeology in the Department of Anthropology at The Ohio State University. Her research examines the emergence of Fort Ancient agricultural societies in the Middle Ohio Valley, with particular emphasis on transitions from Late Woodland communities, ecologies, and ritual landscapes. Her research also focuses on the use of legacy museum collections and archival records as a critical and non-destructive way to address archaeological questions.
Her dissertation investigates the Peach Orchard site in Hamilton County, Ohio, integrating archival research, geophysical survey, excavation, and collections-based analysis to examine the role that this important promontory played in Fort Ancient settlement and ceremonial systems in the lower Little Miami Valley. More broadly, her research program examines social transformation, ritual practice, and landscape use in the Eastern Woodlands through the integration of archaeological, archival, and museum collections.
Grace has directed archaeological fieldwork, supervised undergraduate field schools, and taught undergraduate anthropology courses. Her research has been published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports and as a book chapter, and she regularly presents her work at regional and national conferences.
