This past week Bloomberg published a Q&A with Nick Kawa, Associate Professor of Anthropology, about his new book After the Flush: Rethinking the Future of Human Waste. The discussion delves into the history of the modern sanitation system, how its outputs are incorporated into the American landscape today, and how alternative systems are also being enacted in response to disruptions caused by the housing and climate crises. An excerpt from Dr. Kawa’s book was also recently featured in Earth Island Journal, which is freely accessible.
