On June 5th, the Department of Anthropology will host 100 Columbus City School teachers as part of the STEAMM Rising program at OSU. It will be a full day of activities where teachers discuss the many ways anthropological discussions can be brought to the classroom through interactive activities! The OSU team leading the program is comprised of Jeff Petterson, Stephanie Fannin, Olivia Schmalfuss, Madelyn Green and Mark Hubbe!

Activities will include Garbology and the Tools That Make Us – where teachers explore how students of different ages can engage with archaeology through hands-on experiences by reconstructing past events based on the material remains, left behind by people; Who’s That Ancestor? – where teachers will explore how fossil remains of our ancestors can help students understand humanity’s place in the evolutionary history of life on Earth; Food and Football – An activity that uses familiar aspects of daily life—such as the foods we prepare and our favorite sports teams—to prompt critical discussions about social values and norms; and Fleshing the Skeleton – an activity that demonstrates how skeletal remains can engage students in meaningful discussions by examining how life experiences leave traces on the human skeleton, and how these clues can open conversations about biological differences, identity, and social status!
