Congratulations to The Ohio State University's 2023 University Career Services Committee Career Service Award winner, Dr. Mark Moritz! University Career Services Committee (UCSC) is an organization of university professionals committed to responding to the career development needs of students at Ohio State.

Nomination letter by Richard Fajardo:

"As a long-standing champion of student and alumni career development at The Ohio State University, Dr. Mark Moritz has served the College of Arts and Sciences as a Professor since 2006. He runs the Moritz Lab for ongoing Buckeye research efforts and serves as Graduate Studies Committee Chair for the Department of Anthropology.

As Dr. Moritz states on the Moritz Lab website: “My greatest impact on the world is through teaching students at Ohio State where every day I have the ability to make decisions about how to help students learn to think as anthropologists and prepare them for successful professional careers and meaningful lives beyond the degree.”

In 2019, Dr. Moritz created the course “ANTHROP 3005: Careers with Anthropology” to help students explore a vast array of career opportunities in their field. Buckeye Anthropology alumni work in a wide range of sectors including: military, medical, law, business, government, retail, financial, education, information technology, and archaeology. Examples of their professions include: teacher, manager, engineer, technician, researcher, law professional, retail professional, financial professional, and graphic designer.

Dr. Moritz empowers each student to experience things from their own perspective, gain insight over the course of the semester, identify what they like and do not like, and make individualized informed decisions accordingly. In turn, students feel comfortable considering various career and life options without worrying about being judged or pressured to pick a specific direction.

Through ANTHROP 3005, Dr. Moritz partners with ASC Career Success to have coaches present on various professional development topics throughout the semester. He also helps students develop professional portfolios for them to customize for their desired fields. Furthermore, students conduct informational interviews with Anthropology alumni, where students learn via 1-on-1 conversations about alumni experiences in various fields.

In turn, Dr. Moritz and his students share these “Career Profiles” annually via the department’s website for the benefit of other students and alumni. The interview process and the sharing of these stories help students and alumni build networking connections, explore student experiential opportunities, and find professional opportunities in the field.

Overall, while Dr. Moritz continues to conduct research and publish and present his findings on a multitude of topics, he always makes sure to help students and alumni in any way that he can. It is an honor and a privilege to nominate Dr. Mark Moritz for the UCSC Career Service Award."
